Homemade Pear and Cranberry Jam: A Simple and Versatile Recipe

This pear and cranberry jam is simple and versatile. I like to use different varieties of pears each time I make a batch. Depending on the variety of pear you use, some batches may be a wee bit more sweet or tart. No matter what, you will have a jam that will be loved by all.

Ingredients:
4 to 5 cups mashed pears
2 cups cranberries (fresh or frozen)
1/4 cup lemon juice
3 tablespoons pectin (I do not always use)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
4 cups of sugar
1 teaspoon unsalted butter (optional)

Directions:
1. Mix pears, cranberries, lemon juice, spices, and 2 cups of sugar in a large pot and bring to a boil as you stir. I start out on medium heat to get the pears and cranberries warm and then turn up to medium high and bring to a boil. Since you are making jam, the pears need to be able to break down. Use a potato masher and mash down the pears and cranberries. If they are still a wee bit hard, boil for a few minutes more or until you can mash the pears.
2. Add the rest of the sugar and pectin and bring back to a boil. Stir!! Let this boil for 1 minute.
3. Add the butter.
4. Can/preserve as you normally would for any type of jam.

This is one fantastic jam and I love it on English Muffins, waffles, and it goes well with sharp cheddar cheese and brie on crackers!! I never use the pectin so this is totally up to you. Pectin makes the jam more solid and I like mine a wee bit runny. Enjoy!!
