I don’t need you to understand why I am Gay
I don’t need you to understand what it is like to live in my skin
I don’t need you to understand how I am a woman trapped in a man’s body
I don’t need you to understand why I love both men and women
I don’t need you to be tolerant of the way I was born
I don’t need you to understand that I come from a poor region in my country and I am looking for a better life in your country
I don’t need you to know what I went through to escape torture in my homeland
I don’t need you to know what it is like to be raped
I don’t need you to know what it is like to be elderly and trying to get by
I don’t need you to understand what it is like to have been a slave
I don’t need you to know what it is like to have been verbally and physically abused
I don’t need you to know what it is like to go hungry day after day
I don’t need you to know what it is like to be homeless
I don’t need you to understand how it feels to be hated just because of the color of my skin
I don’t need you to remember that your ancestors were once immigrants looking for a better life just like I am now
I do not expect you to know, feel, or understand any of this
